Houmongi [Gotaro Gouda] Kyoto Embroidery Artist All-Over Embroidery Rice Planting Pattern Silk Awase Kimono No Crest Light Gray-Green
This is a formal kimono (houmongi) by Kotaro Goda, a master of Kyoto embroidery.
Works by this artist are rare, and pieces by him are seldom seen. This is a highly valuable work of art.
He is said to be at the pinnacle of Japanese embroidery, as he handles everything from thread dyeing and pattern creation to the final embroidery himself.
The plump and incredibly detailed expressions of each individual stitch convey the texture and artistry of handwork.
The outlines and curves of the petals are all meticulously rendered by hand embroidery, creating a breathtaking sight up close.
This piece features motifs of rice planting scenes, pine, bamboo, and plum, as well as waterside landscapes.
The artist's signature is placed on the overlap (okumi), and the lining (hakkake) is of the same color with a foil pattern.
As it does not have a family crest, it can be worn as a casual formal kimono by anyone.
We hope you will enjoy wearing it for a wide range of formal occasions with a fukuro obi. (^^)

Born in Ehime Prefecture in 1928, he studied under Minoru Inagaki, a Living National Treasure in stencil dyeing.
He exhibited at the Nitten exhibition and won awards multiple times, but after 1953, he stopped exhibiting and focused on honing his embroidery skills, becoming active as a Kyoto embroidery artist.
He was involved in kimono design at Matsuzakaya for many years and also designed the kimono for the wedding of Princess Michiko in 1959.
