◇ Nishimura Hōkai
Poet (Master of Uguisu-no-Yakata), disciple of Ishibashi Rasō. Primary business: dealer in saltpeter (raw material for gunpowder). Also operated a business in Seki-machi dealing in dry goods, paper, and camellia bark. Central figure in organizing the tanka poetry society Unkin-sha in Seki.
Born in Seki City (formerly Seki Town, Mugi District), Gifu Prefecture. Loved waka poetry from a young age and later studied it under Ishibashi Rasō in Nagoya. Interacted with Hisada Sōya, Sōetsu, Iwai Sōrin, Matsuo Sōkei, Raku Kichizaemon, Takahashi Dōhachi, Katō Jōsuke, and others.
Selected for the Imperial Court's Utakai Hajime (Poetry Reading) three times: in 1903 (Meiji 36), 1925 (Taishō 14), and 1927 (Shōwa 2).
Pen name: Master of Uguisu-no-Yakata. Real name: Nishimura Ichiroji, Kōnosuke.
Died in 1940 (Shōwa 15).

Yasumishi shi ōkimi no shikimaseru mikuni yutaka ni haru wa ki ni keri (The land of our great ruler, who has rested, is abundant as spring arrives) - Written by Hōkai (as noted on the back of the tanzaku).
