Keizo Koyama (1897-1987)
A Western-style painter born in Komoro Town, Nagano Prefecture (now Komoro City), active from the Taisho to Showa eras. He dropped out of Keio University to become a painter and studied oil painting in France at the recommendation of Toson Shimazaki. His meticulously calculated compositions and powerful, dynamic brushstrokes were highly acclaimed overseas, and he left behind numerous masterpieces throughout his life. He also dedicated himself to nurturing future generations, such as by awarding the Keizo Koyama Art Prize and encouraging scholarships for students studying oil painting restoration techniques. In 1971, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Komoro City, and in 1975, he received the Order of Culture. In the same year, he built a museum in his hometown of Komoro City, fulfilling a lifelong dream, and donated it along with his works to the city. His representative works include the Asama Mountain series, the White Heron Castle series, and Bleu de Bourgogne, which continue to be highly regarded today.
