Tetsuya Chiba
Manga artist. Real name Tetsuya Chiba. Born in Tokyo, spent his childhood in Manchuria. Graduated from Nihon University First High School. Debuted in 1956 with the book Fukushuu no Semushi Otoko while still in high school. After working in rental manga, he began serializing shojo manga in magazines from 1958, and then moved on to shonen manga from 1961. He established a typical style of shonen manga with works such as the baseball story Chikai no Makyu (original by Kazuya Fukumoto), the war story Shidenkai no Taka, and the school sports story Harris no Kaze. His boxing manga Ashita no Joe (1968-1973), created with original writer Asao Takamori (Ikki Kajiwara), had a strong impact on young people and became a social phenomenon. He received the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2002 and was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2014.
