Katsushika Hokusai, the world's most famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist. And among his works, The Great Wave off Kanagawa is renowned as his masterpiece.

With Mount Fuji in the quiet background, the towering wave is powerfully depicted, and its bold composition and delicate details shocked people.

Known overseas as The Great Wave, it is said that composer Debussy was inspired by this work to compose the symphonic poem La Mer.

In recent years, it has been featured as a highlight piece in numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally. Due to its immense popularity, it has been chosen as the design for Japan's new banknote (1,000 yen bill) to be issued in July 2024.

It continues to be highly acclaimed worldwide, setting a world record for a ukiyo-e print at Christie's New York auction in March 2023, selling for $2.76 million (approximately 360 million yen), the highest price ever achieved.
