Antique Late 19th Century Patent March 21 Gold-Filled & Vulcanite Slide Pencil / Dip Pen (Hicks Patent Design).  Victorian sliding writing instrument featuring a mechanical extension mechanism, rich gold-filled metalwork, and a classic black vulcanite barrel. This piece features the significant and highly sought-after mechanical patent stamp PAT MARCH 21 (referencing the landmark March 21, 1871 patent used by premier American makers like William S. Hicks for telescopic magic slide pencils).  Produced in the late 1800s during the height of Victorian stationery craftsmanship, it includes an ornate top ring loop, originally intended to be worn on a chatelaine or pocket watch chain. It is crafted with gold-filled metal components paired with a dark black vulcanite/gutta-percha body. In well-preserved antique condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, the mechanical slide functions as intended.
