Lion Hunt Pattern Nishiki (Woven Silk) - Ke-nishiki (Warp-faced Brocade)

The National Treasure Lion Hunt Pattern Nishiki, passed down at Horyu-ji Temple, is also known as Shitenno Monhat Nishiki. It features a symmetrical composition with a central tree of life within a typical Sasanian Persian circular motif, depicting four Persian-style knights controlling winged steeds and attempting to shoot leaping lions. This is a dynamic pattern, often referred to as a hunting motif. This item is a variation of that Lion Hunt Pattern Nishiki. The tree of life has been removed, the Persian knights reduced to one, and the lions to a single one. Elaborate floral patterns are arranged in the four corners of the circular motif, woven in the Ke-nishiki (warp-faced brocade) technique with a new composition.
