Near Mint Condition - Approx. $13200 JPY - Gato Mikio Shoten - Yamanaka Lacquerware - Soup Bowl, Tea Bowl, Rice Bowl - Cherry Blossom - Long-established
This is a bowl made using a potter's wheel by Gato Mikio Shoten, a long-established maker of Yamanaka lacquerware.
The rounded, comforting shape of this dish is striking. It fits gently in your hand and is perfect for everyday use.
It would look lovely if you chose one type for your whole family, creating a sense of unity. It's also recommended as your personal My Bowl.
The soup bowl has a full capacity of approximately 360ml. This is a good size for ochazuke (rice with tea), miso soup with plenty of ingredients, tonjiru (pork miso soup), or oshiruko (sweet red bean soup).
It's not too small and not too big, making it a comfortable size for both men and women that fits well in the hand.
This bowl, which conveys the gentle warmth of wood, has the name of the wood engraved on the back.
Compared to Gato Mikio Shoten's MATEVARI series, these bowls can be stacked compactly for storage.
I purchased these new at the store for guests. I believe they were used once or twice. They have been stored in a dedicated cupboard within a climate-controlled pantry.
There are no chips or cracks, and no noticeable scratches; they are in good condition.
Please note that as these are not factory-produced items, the patterns and sizes may vary slightly. Each piece is unique.
*As these were for entertaining, I also have many chawan (rice bowls), meshiwan (rice bowls), and shirawan (soup bowls). I can offer a discount for combined shipping.

■What is Yamanaka Lacquerware?
The history of Yamanaka lacquerware began when a group of woodworkers moved from Echizen Province to the village of Masago in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City, during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
The area has moderate humidity throughout the year, which is ideal for drying lacquer, and it has long been known as a production center for lacquerware.
■How Wood is Cut
The delicate woodcraft of Yamanaka lacquerware is supported by its unique method of cutting wood.
In many production areas, logs are cut into planks to create the wood pieces, a method called yokibitori (cross-cutting).
In Yamanaka, however, logs are cut into rounds, and wood pieces are taken from these rounds, a method called tatebitori (longitudinal cutting).
Because the wood is cut in the direction of the tree's growth, it is less prone to warping or twisting and is suitable for intricate processing.
