Shonai Sashiko, a traditional craft from the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture. Vase mat.
Sho-nai Sashiko, a traditional craft passed down in the Sho-nai region of Yamagata Prefecture.
It is counted as one of Japan's three great sashiko techniques, alongside Tsugaru's Kogin-zashi and Nanbu's Hishi-zashi.
The pattern in the image is a meticulous and beautiful geometric design, similar to Juji-bishi Kake-zashi (or a variation of Ajisai-zashi), one of the representative techniques of Sho-nai Sashiko.
Characteristics of Sho-nai Sashiko:
Meticulous Stitches: Characterized by using white cotton thread on indigo-dyed cotton cloth with extremely fine stitches.
Diverse Designs: There are over 40 patterns abstracting familiar objects, such as Kome-zashi (rice stitch), Kaki no Hana (persimmon flower), Hishi-zashi (diamond stitch), and Soroban-zashi (abacus stitch).
Practicality and Prayer: Originally born from the wisdom of life in the harsh cold of Tohoku to reinforce and insulate cloth. At the same time, it embodies earnest wishes (prayers) for a bountiful harvest and family health.
