Quoted from the official online store:

Regular persimmon wood has a plain white grain and is commonly called white persimmon. It is difficult to use due to its small diameter and severe twisting, making it of little value as a material. However, extremely rarely (said to be 1 in 10,000 trees), black persimmon with black stripes is discovered and has been highly prized. (It is impossible to distinguish between white persimmon and black persimmon from the appearance of a standing persimmon tree.)
It is the rarest and highest-grade wood among Japanese lumber, and is a highly valuable and prized masterpiece wood worldwide.
Many black persimmon items are used in the Shosoin Imperial Treasury's woodworking, and it is also considered a top-grade material for tea ceremony utensils, and has been highly valued since ancient times.
Its unique and beautiful striped pattern deepens in color and luster with use due to the oil content of the black persimmon, developing a dignified appearance befitting a truly premium product.
