Description
Scientific Name: Magicicada septendecim

Magicicada septendecim, also known as the Pharaoh Cicada or 17-year Cicada, is the largest and northernmost-living species of periodical cicada native to Canada and the United States, with a 17-year life cycle.

Like other species in the Magicicada genus, this insect has reddish eyes and wing veins, and a black dorsal thorax. It has broad orange stripes on the underside of its abdomen and orange spots between its eyes and forewings on the sides of its thorax. Its mating call is said to be a high-pitched sound, described as sounding like someone calling out Weeeeeeeeee or Pharaoh. This characteristic is shared with the newly discovered 13-year periodical cicada, Magicicada neotredecim.

Due to the many similarities between Magicicada septendecim and its close relatives, the 13-year periodical cicadas Magicicada neotredecim and Magicicada tredecim, these three species are often collectively referred to as decim periodical cicadas.

The average life cycle from egg to natural death of an adult is approximately 17 years. However, the life cycle can range from 13 to 21 years.
