This is a men's unlined kimono, tailored in a straight-sleeved style, made from Chichibu cotton (pre-war deadstock). It is entirely hand-sewn.
It is tailored for a tall, slightly slender build.
The wearer is 178cm tall with a 76cm waist.

As it is unlined, it can be washed at home. Before tailoring, the fabric was de-starched and boiled to pre-shrink it as much as possible to prevent distortion.
To allow for machine dehydration, the armholes and collar are reinforced with extra stitching.
A hemp interlining is used in the collar for quicker drying.
The shoulder lining and back panel are made from a durable woven bleached cloth, over-dyed in light indigo.

This garment recreates the popular straight-sleeved kimono worn by artisans and fishermen from the late Edo period to before the war. While there are several types of straight sleeves, such as the funaboko and hakami, this is the orthodox koiguchi style. It allows for easy movement, making it suitable for cooking, cleaning, and gardening while wearing a kimono. It also fits well under a haori or hanten.

By adjusting the way the sleeves are attached and the side seams, the stiffness often felt from the side to the abdomen in traditional straight-sleeved kimonos has been reduced.

The body width has been tailored using a slightly modified version of the shichigosan gobu mawashi style, which was popular among gamblers and travelers in the past, to fit the modern physique with less prominent lower abdomen.
This makes it comfortable to walk in, without the waist area flapping loosely.

Inspired by Hasegawa Shigure's Old News Nihonbashi and essays by Okamoto Kidō and Kubota Mantarō,
with the theme of kimonos worn by Edo commoners appearing in plays and stories from the Bunka-Bunsei era to the Great Kanto Earthquake,
this garment is inspired by a young craftsman who is skilled at his work but also frequents gambling dens.
Finishing work while it's still light, heading to the bathhouse, and then perhaps trying his luck at dice on the way home...
It evokes the spirit of a young man from Edo.

The tailoring process was so enjoyable that the garment has not been worn much. However, due to long-term storage, there are folding creases. These should disappear when hung with a light misting, but we can also press it before shipping if you wish. Please let us know via the transaction screen.
