This film is the 82nd directorial work by master filmmaker Yoji Yamada, adapted from the novel by Kyoko Nakajima, which won the 143rd Naoki Prize.

In 1936, a pure young girl, Taki Nunomiya, comes from the countryside and begins working as a maid in a small, modern red triangular house in the suburbs of Tokyo. She spends peaceful days with the master of the house, Masaki Hirai, who works for a toy company, his wife Tokiko, and their two 5-year-old sons, Kyoichi. One day, a young man named Shoji Itakura, Masaki's subordinate, appears, and Tokiko's heart begins to lean towards Itakura. More than 60 years later, Kenji Arai, a relative of Taki, reads Taki's autobiography, written in a university notebook in her later years, and learns the truth that had been hidden until then.

Tokiko is played by Takako Matsu, and the elderly Taki is played by Chieko Baisho. Haru Kuroki, who plays the young Taki, won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. Domestically, she also won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 38th Japan Academy Film Prize.
