[What is Incubation?]
This is a new generation reed conditioning method devised by Bradford Behn of BEHN, a US mouthpiece manufacturer.
Incubation involves placing reeds in a high-humidity environment for an extended period, gradually hydrating the cane fibers and shaping them.
It is an innovative method of growing reeds by simply leaving them untouched, without playing them.
Not playing them means there is no deterioration from playing. This method allows for more consistent and higher quality conditioning than traditional methods.
Reeds that have undergone incubation will reach their full potential, vibrating lively and naturally. They last longer, and there are fewer duds. They can even be used for performances on the same day.
By rotating incubated reeds, you can use them in optimal condition for about a month.
The only drawback is that the conditioning process itself takes over two months. However, if you plan ahead and start the process in advance, you will always have perfectly conditioned reeds ready to play.
