Hand-Carved Macassar Ebony & African Blackwood Elephant Bookends - Matched Pair with Sliding Dovetail Construction  The vertical book rests are connected to the flat bases using traditional, hand-cut sliding dovetail joints. This allows the dense hardwood to expand and contract naturally without splitting.  The heavy figural elephants are securely anchored to the bases from underneath using deeply recessed, period-correct antique slotted flathead screws.  Each elephant features detailed hand-chiseled skin wrinkles, structural ears, and beautifully preserved natural bone/horn material inlays for the eyes, tusks, and toenails.  Because these pieces are completely handmade, subtle, charming asymmetries exist between the two figures, proving their authentic artisan origins.  The wood has a rich, naturally aged patina. All tusks, eyes, and toenails are intact. Minor, microscopic hairline surface check lines may be present on the wood bases, completely typical and expected for aged, heavy tropical hardwoods.
