Kanreki is a celebration of longevity for those turning 60 years old, originating in China.

Kanreki, as the name suggests, means returning to the original calendar. The original calendar refers to the Chinese zodiac sign of one's birth year. Therefore, Kanreki = returning to the Chinese zodiac sign of one's birth year.

The Chinese zodiac is a combination of the Twelve Earthly Branches and the Ten Heavenly Stems, forming a 60-year cycle. In other words, it takes 61 years to return to the Chinese zodiac sign of one's birth year. This is said to be the origin of celebrating Kanreki at the age of 60 (full years) or 61 (counted years).

There is no fixed date for celebrating Kanreki. It is advisable to consult with family members and hold a meal gathering at a time that is convenient for everyone.
At that time, it is customary for the person celebrating to wear a red chanchanko.
This is because the color red is believed to have protective powers, and in Japan, there has been a tradition since ancient times of dressing newborns in red garments.

Since Kanreki signifies returning to one's birth year's calendar, it is considered a return to infancy.
This is said to be the origin of the custom of wearing a red chanchanko for Kanreki celebrations.
