Kurume Cotton-Filled Hanten has become a regional industry in Kurume, along with its textile production.
It is said to have originated in the 1950s when wholesale merchants in Kurume commissioned textile manufacturers to produce them.
The secret to its warmth lies in the hanten-specific batting, generously blended with cotton by a long-established futon manufacturer.
It excels in heat retention and moisture absorption, instantly absorbing body heat when you put it on, bringing it close to your body's highest temperature.
It also plumps up when dried in the sun, and the hanten made from a single layer of batting is flexible and conforms to your skin for a comfortable fit.

[Katsuo Stripe and Tsumugi Weave]
The structure is a plain weave fabric. The warp uses 40-ply yarn, and the weft uses 20-single yarn and nep yarn, which has knots created during spinning.
The characteristic is the small fiber knots appearing on the surface of the fabric, giving it a rustic texture. It is piece-dyed and used for various patterns such as solids and stripes.
Katsuo stripe refers to a stripe pattern that gradually thins from the back to the belly of a bonito, creating a gradient effect. It has been used as a dyeing and weaving expression since the Edo period.
As chemical dyes became widespread, various colors and patterns were created beyond just indigo. Currently, in the Kurume textile production area, striped cotton fabrics are often called katsuo stripe.
