This was an innovative, compact game console that launched in Japan on October 30, 1987. Based on the Core Concept, it was designed with the idea of expanding functionality by connecting various peripherals. Although only one controller was included, connecting a Multi-Tap allowed for up to five controllers to be connected, enabling the largest number of simultaneous players at the time. In November 1988, the world's first CD-ROM-equipped expansion interface, CD-ROM², was released. This CD-ROM expansion brought a wave of software distribution via optical discs to the gaming industry.

The PC Engine mini is a compact replica of the PC Engine that includes multiple titles originally released for the PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16.
