SANMARU FABRIC, the world's only machine-woven sashiko, uses fabric from Sanwa Textile, Japan's only creator of machine-style sashiko for all its products. Sashiko (-sashiko-) is a traditional technique that originated in the Tohoku region of Japan about 500 years ago. It is said to have been developed in areas with harsh winters unsuitable for cotton cultivation, where thick thread was passed through the fabric to add thickness and strength. Sanwa Textile has recreated this hand-stitched process using a unique machine-style sashiko weave. Using traditional looms, they carefully weave the fabric over time, incorporating plenty of air to achieve a soft finish reminiscent of hand-weaving. When you hold it, the unique raised texture of sashiko reveals a soft and warm appearance. ORIMOTO = Textile Mill & Craft = Sashiko Weave is woven at Fukushima's Sanwa Textile, a workshop run by textile artisans who have been involved in weaving for four generations since the Meiji era. Kenichi Ohkoshi, who has studied for many years under Etsuko Yanagi, a textile dyer and nephew of Soetsu Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei movement, serves as the representative.
