YFH-631 Yamaha Flugelhorn
This is a YAHAMA Flugelhorn YFH 631.
The 631, famous for being used by Chuck Mangione in Feels So Good, is no longer produced with its original bell material, so perhaps some of you are looking for one.
Some may think it's a lightweight model due to the association with his light, airy sound, but in reality, it has a substantial wall thickness and produces a deep tone. I feel that the sound can be varied widely depending on the mouthpiece setup.
There is no seizing in the slides, pistons, or other moving parts, and no issues that would hinder playing.
However, due to what may be an imperfect adjustment of the 2nd piston's valve guide, there is some catching when removing the piston, and compared to the other valves, the guide feels like it's rubbing. The piston itself moves smoothly, and once you start playing, you won't notice it, so I left it as is, but I believe adjustment may be necessary if it bothers you.
Additionally, the felt is not the original part, and those who are concerned may want to replace it. I used it in this condition because the alignment seemed better than with the original felt.
There are scuffs and peeling of the lacquer consistent with its age, and there are dents in the lower tubing leading to the bell and in the bell itself. I have included close-up photos, but the dents in the bell did not photograph well. I believe the dents are at a level that would be immediately apparent upon seeing the instrument in person.
The original case shown in the photos is included. Black tape is applied under the handle in the 9th photo to cover paint. While there are no functional issues, please consider the case as being for storage or as a bonus item.
