Antique Black Ivory Silk Floral w Peacocks Embroidered Manila Fashion Shawl READ
Unbranded antique
Antique Manila Shawl - Black Silk with Ivory Silk Embroidery & Fringe - 50 square plus 5 fringe (steamed straight) This beautiful fashion shawl features intricate, high-relief hand embroidery. It is high contrast with cream silk thread embroidered on black silk and trimmed with 5 silk fringe (the length used for shoulder shawls). Shawls with much longer fringe were specifically designed for the drama of flamenco dancing. It features a dense pattern of flowers and peacock bird motifs.... hallmarks of antique Manila artistry. Antique and not tagged, the style of the heavy silk embroidery is most characteristic of the older late 1800s Spanish Manila shawls. Storage Tip: I've restored and straightened fringe on many of these shawls over the years. To keep them at their best, care is necessary. Never hang on a hanger as the combined weight of the silk and the heavy embroidery will cause the silk to stretch and eventually pull tears around the embroidery. They are best stored laid flat with acid-free tissue paper on top and rolled on a sturdy tube to prevent any permanent creases that will only hasten deterioration. They should periodically, like an antique quilt, be unfolded and refolded in a different direction. Condition is good. There are some little holes with the biggest one being about an inch long x 1/2 wide. I held it up to light to find and marked my finds. Most were in the black border area, and they can be patch repaired. A few spots are noted .
