※Okawame is a very hardy, easy-to-grow, and nutrient-rich healthy vegetable. It has no bitterness and can be used immediately in cooking after picking and a quick blanch (or no blanching at all). It can be harvested from spring to early winter.
※You can also harvest the bulbils (mukago), which can be used in dishes like mukago rice, tempura, and stir-fries. They are fluffy and very delicious.

※To grow, place the tubers on the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Once the vines start to grow, repeatedly pinch the tips to encourage branching. You can then train them to climb a net, stake, or fence to create a large curtain-like growth or a more compact plant. It can also serve as a edible sunshade curtain. (If you don't pinch the tips, the vines won't branch out.)

※Okawame is a perennial plant in the Basellaceae family and is very easy to grow. In tropical climates, it has green leaves year-round. However, in Honshu, where winter temperatures are low, it loses its leaves and goes dormant as a tuber, sprouting again in the spring. In Honshu, it can be harvested from around May to early winter.
As it is a tropical plant, it is sensitive to cold in winter and requires frost protection.
To prevent the tubers from freezing in winter, cover the base with plastic or straw mulch. If grown in pots, keep them in a warm indoor location or on a balcony, creating a greenhouse-like environment, or adapt your methods based on your local climate.
